Our 4-Day Yarra Ranges Trip Itinerary for Families

Thinking of taking a long weekend getaway to the Yarra Valley and wider Yarra Ranges Shire? You’d not be faulted for imagining a trip itinerary filled with fine dining and winery tours. However, for those of us with little ones, holidaying in the Yarra Ranges has so much to offer beyond just these gastronomical experiences. From adventurous hiking trails to encounters with wildlife, this east Victorian destination provides family-friendly holidays unlike any other.

Our experts have put together this great 4-day Yarra Ranges trip itinerary that includes a little something for every member of the family.

Day 1: Exploring Healesville

Visit Healesville Sanctuary

There is truly no kid-friendly attraction in greater Melbourne that’s more exciting than the Healesville Sanctuary. Created with a focus on native animal breeding programmes, this wildlife sanctuary allows you to have up-close encounters with kangaroos, and koalas, catch sight of a platypus, and behold the beauty of native Australian birds. For those with overactive kiddos, there are plenty of outdoor play spaces to burn off all that curious energy.

And for families who want to stay in the centre of the action, there are plenty of hotels in Healesville in proximity to the sanctuary as well as the town’s other kid-friendly stores, parks, and other attractions.

Grab at Scoop at the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery

If there’s one thing that can be agreed on it’s that nothing brings people together like chocolate or ice cream. The Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery is the perfect destination for parents and kids.

With chocolate tastings, fun workshops for kids, and a cafe that overlooks the orchards, this chocolate factory is the perfect day destination for those with a sweet tooth. Just make sure you take some chocolates home as souvenirs for the rest of the family!

Enjoy a Family Dinner in Healesville

The Yarra region is full of enticing food options that showcase the area’s unique flair and taste. Finding a family-friendly restaurant with a focus on local produce is a breeze with amazing options dotted all along the Maroondah highway running right through the centre of Healesville.

If your accommodation has a kitchenette, we highly recommend grabbing a pie at the Beechworth Bakery to enjoy for your supper with a side of salad. And for parents, a little tipple or even some bottle shopping at the Four Pillars Gin Distillery is an absolute must.

Day 2: Nature & Adventure in Warburton

Do the La La Falls Walk

Day 2 of your Yarra Ranges trip itinerary is all about connecting with the region’s striking beauty in one of the most serene townships: Warburton! Sitting virtually at the base of Mount Donna Buang, Warburton is central to many of the Yarra Ranges’ most scenic walks, including La La Falls.

The La La Falls Walk is a 3.2 km long walking track with a slight incline, making it the perfect distance and difficulty level for families with kids above four. This scenic hike also rewards you with stunning views of the eponymous La La Falls. Plus it’s a round track, meaning you won’t have trouble finding your way back to the car.

Explore Warburton’s Historic Township

After a good early morning or afternoon hike, it’s time to head back into town and do a little exploring from the pavements. The township of Warburton is small but packed full of hidden gems. With bakeries, bookshops, vintage shops, and the famous Warburton Candy Emporium, there is something for every member of the family and all tinged with that local, small town charm.

Day 3: Puffing Billy & Dandenong Ranges

Travel back in time at the Puffing Billy Railway

Australia’s oldest steam train, Puffing Billy is a classic in the hearts of many. This scenic train ride will take you through lush forests of greenery from Belgrave to Gembrook. Simply put, a ride on Puffing Billy is the perfect family-friendly activity for a slower paced morning.

Go for a Stroll around Emerald Lake Park

Let the serenity in Dandenong continue with a leisurely walk through the region’s stunning Emerald Lake Park. These parklands are a great destination to start off your day with tranquillity and relaxation.

But there’s more to do here than just taking in the sights on foot. With paddle boats for hire, playgrounds for all ages, and plenty of bushwalking trails, you’d be hard pressed to find a better way to spend an afternoon in the Yarra Ranges.

Reach New Heights at SkyHigh Mount Dandenong

When it comes to dining that’s on top, SkyHigh Mount Dandenong is the restaurant you’ve been looking for. Nestled amongst the peaks of Mount Dandenong with panoramic views of Melbourne city, this destination also boasts stunning gardens and even a hedge maze for the kids.

Day 4: Wildlife & Waterfalls in Marysville

Get Lost in Bruno’s Art & Sculpture Garden

Quirky, unique and a personal favourite, Bruno’s Art and Sculpture Garden is a true story of resilience. After being destroyed by the 2009 Black Saturday fires, artist Bruno Torfs has committed himself to rebuilding the garden which is now thriving with over 120 sculptures and an art gallery.

Grab a Country Pie at the Marysville Country Bakery

Another must visit is the Marysville Country Bakery. With all your usual suspects available, the vanilla slice is a classic that cannot be passed up on. Dine in for a nice lunch, or stock up on some sweet treats for your journey back home.

Make the Most of your Family Trip to the Yarra Ranges

With that, hopefully you’ve been inspired to delve into the beauty of Yarra Valley with your family. Whilst our 4-day itinerary is packed with many different places to visit, they each encourage a child’s natural curiosity whilst connecting and grounding them in the beautiful natural landscape.

To keep safe when travelling with children in the Yarra Valley, make sure to pack extra jumpers and jackets for the unpredictable and ever changing weather conditions. Plenty of water and snacks for car journeys are also a peace keeper. The attractions in the Yarra Valley go far beyond the wineries. If you’ve been dreaming of a screen-free vacation full of exploration and adventure, the natural splendours of the Yarra Valley is the answer.
