Mount Hotham

Mount Hotham is Australia's highest lifted ski village (1,861 m) — an upside-down resort where you ski down to the lifts. 428 m vertical, advanced terrain, the only ski-resort airport in the country.

Mount Hotham sits 1,861 metres above sea level on the Great Alpine Road in Victoria''s north-east — the highest lifted resort village in Australia, and the country''s only ski village that''s structured upside-down. The village runs along a high alpine ridge; you ski down to the lifts from your accommodation, you ride up on a chairlift to get back to lunch. It''s the most unusual layout in the southern hemisphere and it gives Hotham its distinct atmosphere: small, exposed, weather-prone, and from a clear morning at 1,860 m, jaw-droppingly beautiful.

Our writer Marcus has been driving the Great Alpine Road from Bright up to Hotham every winter since the early 2010s. The current consensus on our team: Mount Hotham is the most interesting ski resort in Australia for intermediate-and-above skiers, the most weather-dependent (the road in and the lifts both close more often than other resorts), and the most rewarding if you happen to hit it on a clear day after a fresh dump.

The ski terrain

Hotham has 320 hectares of skiable terrain split across 13 lifts (4 chairlifts and 9 surface lifts). The terrain breakdown is 20% beginner, 40% intermediate, 40% advanced — the most advanced-heavy split of any major Australian resort. The signature terrain is on the southern side at Mary''s Slide and the Heavenly Valley chairs — chutes, gully runs, off-piste below the chairlifts when the snow''s good. The Heavenly Express chair gives access to the Mary''s Slide bowl which is the most expert terrain in Victoria.

For intermediates, the runs off the Summit Chair and the Big D Chair are wide, fast cruising slopes. The Big D run down to the Big D base is the resort''s longest sustained intermediate descent, about 1.5 km top to bottom with the views over the Bogong High Plains the whole way. For beginners, the gentle Heavenly Valley Beginners area at the bottom of the resort has the magic carpet and the dedicated learner T-bar.

The signature feature is the vertical drop. Hotham''s 428 m of lifted vertical is the largest in Victoria and second only to Thredbo in Australia. The longest run is the 2.5 km Heavenly Valley descent, mostly intermediate but with optional advanced lines through trees on either side.

The Mount Hotham Airport

Hotham is the only ski resort in Australia with a commercial airport. Mount Hotham Airport at Horsehair Plain, 30 minutes from the resort by ski transfer, takes winter-season flights from Sydney via QantasLink''s regional service — Friday afternoons and Sunday afternoons through July, August and into September. Bookings open in May for the August–September window. The flight from Sydney is 1h 45min vs the 6+ hours drive via Melbourne. Combined with a Sunday lift ticket, you can do a full Hotham long-weekend out of Sydney without ever needing to drive on snow.

The transfer from the airport to the village is handled by the resort — it''s a 4WD bus with chains and the road is sealed but climbs from 1,250 m at the airport to 1,750 m at the village. It''s worth noting that Hotham Airport occasionally closes for weather (fog, snow on the runway); have a backup plan for getting home if you take the flight.

The village

Hotham''s village runs along the ridgeline of the Great Alpine Road for about 2 km, with lodge clusters at Big D (the eastern end, near the entry station), Davenport (the central cluster around the Hotham Central building), and The Summit (the western, highest end, near Summit Chair). Lodges are mostly 1960s and 1970s alpine architecture, family-owned or club-owned, with shared living spaces and bunk-room sleeping for working-class skiing families that have been coming here for generations. A handful of newer condo developments — Hotham Heights, the Hotham Inn — provide hotel-style options.

Hotham Central is the hub: the General Store, the Smacka Café, the Hotham Pharmacy, the ski school check-in, the lift ticket office and the Hotham Central Hotel for an after-ski beer. The whole village is walkable in 15 minutes end-to-end, with the over-snow ridge walks between lodge clusters part of the daily ritual.

Dinner Plain

Six minutes'' bus ride east of Hotham proper sits Dinner Plain, a separate purpose-built village from the 1980s with its own architectural identity (timber chalets in the snow-gum forest). Dinner Plain is at 1,560 m — lower than Hotham — and has its own small lift (the Heavenly Valley link is the connection back to Hotham proper). It''s an excellent base for the green season (more sheltered, snow-gum walks all around) and a quieter winter base for families. The Dinner Plain Brewing Co. on Big Muster Drive does an extremely good in-house brew and is the standout dinner pick at the village.

Summer Hotham

Hotham comes alive in the green season for hikers and cyclists. The Razorback Walk from the village south along the Bogong High Plains is one of Victoria''s best alpine day-walks — 22 km return to Mount Feathertop (Victoria''s second-highest peak), with the option to camp at Federation Hut along the way. The Mount Hotham summit walk (just 1 km return) gives 360-degree views of the high plains. The Australian Alps Walking Track, the country''s longest signposted bushwalk, passes through Hotham on its way from Walhalla to Canberra.

For cyclists, the 7 Peaks Ride includes Hotham as one of its seven graded climbs — the climb from Harrietville is 30 km long and one of the longest road cycling climbs in Australia. The Great Alpine Road from Bright through Hotham and on to Omeo is a 200 km loop that''s become one of the country''s premier road-cycling tours.

How to get there

From Melbourne: 4.5–5 hours, 365 km via the Hume Highway to Wangaratta then the Great Alpine Road through Myrtleford and Bright. Most visitors break the trip at Bright — an excellent base in its own right with a long-standing food and cycling culture (see our Bright guide). From Canberra: 7 hours via the Snowy Mountains Highway and the Bogong Plains. From Sydney: 9 hours by road, or the QantasLink flight to Hotham Airport via the seasonal service.

From mid-June through September the resort requires 2WD vehicles to fit diamond-pattern snow chains on the Great Alpine Road from Harrietville (760 m elevation) upward — chain hire is at Harrietville''s general store and is mandatory in advertised conditions. The road is steep, with hairpin bends, and is regularly closed for snowfall and ice at the top sections. Check the road conditions before driving; the resort''s website publishes a live status.

Lift passes and rentals

Day passes at Hotham run $185–$220 in season. As a Vail Resorts property, the Hotham pass is included in the Epic Australia Pass ($1,090 for 2026 season), which also covers Falls Creek, Perisher and all the major Vail Resorts in North America. The Epic pass pays for itself at around five Hotham days and is the obvious choice for anyone planning more than one trip. Lessons and rentals are bookable through the Hotham Snowsports School at Davenport.

Where to stay

Most accommodation is via lodges and self-contained apartments. The Hotham Inn at Davenport and the Hotham Heights apartments are the two hotel-style options on the mountain. Lodge accommodation — private rooms with shared dining, drying room and lounge — is the traditional Hotham experience and the cheapest. The Snowbird Inn just below the resort on the Great Alpine Road has a separate motel offering for non-skiing travellers (great for Bright base-camp visits).

What we leave for elsewhere

For the bigger and more popular Victorian resort, see Mount Buller. For the larger skiable area at the other Vail-owned VIC resort, see Falls Creek. For the Great Alpine Road base town with the best food and cycling, see Bright. Snow reports and live road status update on the official resort site.

Why we keep coming back

Hotham''s particular pull is the combination of the highest vertical in Victoria, the most committed expert terrain in the state, the only ski resort airport in Australia, and a village layout that''s so distinctive it changes how you ski. If you''re an intermediate-to-advanced skier or boarder, Hotham is where Victoria gets serious. If you''re a hiker or a road cyclist, the green season here is the most rewarding alpine experience in the state. We come up at least twice each winter — once with the family for the Heavenly Valley intermediates, once on our own for Mary''s Slide and the backcountry.

Backcountry access

For experienced skiers and split-boarders, Hotham is also Victoria''s premier backcountry base. The Bogong High Plains south and west of the resort offer hundreds of square kilometres of remote ski-touring terrain, with several huts available for overnight stays (Federation Hut, Cleve Cole Hut, Tawonga Huts). The Bogong High Plains Heritage Trail connects Hotham to Falls Creek across the high plains; in winter it''s a serious 2–3 day ski tour requiring alpine experience, avalanche awareness and the right gear. Australian Adventures runs guided day-tours from the village if you want to dip a toe in. The on-mountain Hotham Snowsports School also runs introductory backcountry programs once a week through peak season.
