Falls Creek

Falls Creek is Victoria's largest skiable area and Australia's only fully pedestrianised ski village — 451 hectares, 14 lifts, 65 km of Nordic trails, over-snow shuttles to your lodge.

Falls Creek is Victoria''s largest ski resort by skiable area and one of the most distinctive ski villages in Australia — a pedestrianised alpine village 1,575 m above sea level on the Bogong High Plains, where private cars aren''t allowed past the entry gate and over-snow transport (oversnow Bombardier "snowcats" and 4WD shuttles) move people and gear between lodges. It''s owned by Vail Resorts — the same parent company as Perisher and Mount Hotham — and shares the Epic Australia Pass with those two resorts plus access to North America''s biggest ski network. The combination of the largest skiable footprint in Victoria, a car-free village, and one of Australia''s biggest cross-country skiing networks makes Falls Creek a separate proposition from its neighbour Hotham 50 km south across the high plains.

Our writer Hannah has been visiting Falls every winter for the better part of a decade, mostly for the Nordic skiing the resort is best-known for. The current consensus on our team: Falls is the resort you choose for a longer ski stay rather than a long-weekend trip, for cross-country skiing more than downhill, and for the village experience more than the on-mountain experience.

The terrain

Falls Creek has 451 hectares of skiable terrain across 14 lifts. The terrain breakdown is 17% beginner, 60% intermediate, 23% advanced. The signature high-altitude terrain is on Mount McKay at 1,840 m, accessible from the resort by 4WD oversnow shuttle and offering the only above-the-tree-line lift-free skiing in the country — you ski back down to the resort via Heathy Spur or the Wishing Well Valley. Mount McKay is technically off-piste; access is via a guided tour with the resort''s snow safety patrol on most clear days through the season.

The lift-served terrain centres on three areas: the Village Bowl (beginner and lower-intermediate, including the dedicated First Tracks beginner area), Ruined Castle (intermediate cruising and the resort''s only chair with a high-speed quad), and International Drop (advanced terrain, with the steepest in-bounds chutes in Victoria). The terrain park sits at the bottom of the Halley''s Comet chair and is one of the country''s better-built terrain parks.

The vertical drop from the top of Halley''s Comet (1,780 m) to the village base (1,575 m) is 205 m on the lift-served terrain — less than Hotham''s 428 m and Thredbo''s 672 m. The longest lift-served run is the 3 km Wishing Well descent, more a long traverse than a steep run.

The cross-country network

Falls is the southern hemisphere''s biggest cross-country (Nordic) skiing destination. 65 km of marked and groomed Nordic trails radiate from the village through the alpine ash and snow-gum forests, with the longest single trail (the Big Hill Loop) at 18 km. The cross-country trail network is the highest-rated in Australia for trail variety, snow consistency and on-trail amenities (warming huts, refreshment stops). The Howmans Gap loop on the western side connects to the broader Bogong High Plains network, including the multi-day Heritage Trail to Mount Hotham.

Nordic skiing has been at Falls for fifty years and the local culture reflects it. There''s a Nordic ski school based at the Cross Country Centre; rentals (skate-skis, classic-skis, gear) are available there at much lower rates than downhill rentals. The Falls Creek Nordic Festival each August is the country''s biggest cross-country event with a marathon, a junior series and the world-cup-equivalent National Championships.

The pedestrianised village

Falls is the only fully pedestrianised ski village in Australia. Private cars are parked at the bottom resort car parks (the Slalom Plaza and Howmans Gap car parks); the resort runs an over-snow shuttle service that takes you, your gear, and your accommodation luggage from the car park to your lodge. The shuttles use Bombardier snowcats designed for the Canadian Rockies, with a heated cabin, and runs every 15–20 minutes through the day from 7am to 11pm in season.

The village stretches up the valley with three rough zones: Slalom Street at the lower end (the lift base, the General Store, the ski school, most rentals), the Village Centre in the middle (Falls Creek Hotel, the bakery, the better restaurants), and the upper village spreading out along the access road (private lodges, the Drome ski-in/ski-out apartments, the family-owned cluster around the Lodge of Falls Creek). The whole place is walkable in 20 minutes end-to-end through the over-snow paths.

How to get there

From Melbourne: 5 hours, 380 km via the Hume Highway to Wodonga then south through Mount Beauty. The base town of Mount Beauty — 30 minutes'' drive below the resort — is the gateway: the chain-fitting station, the better supermarket, the bigger fuel station, and a base for visitors who want cheaper accommodation outside the resort. From Canberra: 7 hours, 450 km via the Snowy Mountains Highway and the Bogong High Plains. From Sydney: 9.5 hours by road. Falls Creek does not have a commercial airport; the closest are Albury (2.5 hours) and Wangaratta (2 hours).

The road from Mount Beauty up to Falls is sealed but is the steepest sustained climb to any ski resort in Australia — 1,000 m of vertical over 30 km. Snow chains are required from June through September; hire them at Mount Beauty before the climb. The road is regularly closed by snowfall or ice; the resort''s road status page updates hourly.

Lift passes, lessons, rentals

Day passes run $185–$220 in season. The Epic Australia Pass covers Falls plus Hotham and Perisher in Australia and the full Vail Resorts network in North America — the consensus best value for anyone planning more than 4 ski days a season. The Falls Creek Ski School runs group, private and First Time Package lessons; the cross-country school operates separately. Equipment rentals are available throughout the village; the standout is Slope Snowsports on Slalom Street for boot fitting.

Summer at Falls

The resort doesn''t operate as a paid attraction in summer; the road in is gated at Mount Beauty. The Bogong High Plains around the resort are open for walking and mountain biking from late November to early May. The Falls to Hotham Heritage Trail is the marquee multi-day hike — 50 km across the alpine plateau with hut accommodation along the way. The Bogong High Plains MTB network is one of the best high-altitude mountain bike networks in Australia. For wildflowers, the period from late December to mid-February is the peak alpine bloom; the High Plains around Pretty Valley are particularly spectacular.

Where to stay

Lodge and self-contained apartment options are the standard. The flagship is the Falls Creek Hotel in the village centre — ski-in/ski-out, restaurant, conference facilities. For families, the Falls Creek Country Club apartments are the long-standing pick. For budget, the family-owned lodges along Schuss Street and the upper village offer share-bath rooms at half the hotel rate. The Mount Beauty base-town option is the cheapest — stay in town and Bombardier up daily.

What we leave for elsewhere

For the upside-down Victorian alternative, see Mount Hotham. For Victoria''s most popular ski resort (and the easiest day-trip from Melbourne), Mount Buller. For the base town with great cycling and food, Bright. Snow and road status update on the official Falls Creek site; cross-country trail status on the Parks Victoria Alpine National Park page.

Why we keep coming back

Falls Creek is the resort that''s the most ski-trip-as-holiday rather than ski-trip-as-day-out. The pedestrianised village, the Bombardier shuttles, the 65 km of cross-country trails, the après at the Falls Creek Hotel and the lodge culture all combine into a longer-stay alpine experience that''s harder to find elsewhere in Australia. We come for a week each winter for the Nordic alone — the downhill is a bonus.

The Falls Creek Nordic Festival and the racing scene

Each August Falls hosts the Kangaroo Hoppet, an annual 42 km cross-country marathon that''s part of the Worldloppet international cross-country series. The Hoppet draws around 1,500 racers from across the globe each year and is one of the more impressive sporting weekends in Australian sport — particularly because it happens at altitude on a Sunday morning in front of family crowds rather than a televised stadium. The shorter 21 km Australian Birkebeiner and the 7 km Joey Hoppet run the same weekend; serious recreational skiers train for it across the winter. The Hoppet weekend also serves as the unofficial midpoint celebration of the Falls ski season and accommodation books out 12 months ahead.

Food and drink in the village

For its remote location, Falls eats surprisingly well. The Falls Creek Hotel bistro is the standby; the Cock''n''Bull on Schuss Street does a properly good wood-fired pizza and the best pasta on the mountain; the Last Hoot at the Frueauf Village apartments does the bistro-and-bar combination late into the evening. For breakfast and lunch on the snow, Cloud 9 at the top of Halley''s Comet has the best chairlift-top dining experience in Australia — the deck overlooks the Spion Kopje Spur with views back across the Bogong High Plains. For coffee in the village, head to Milch Cafe in the Village Centre.
